One Year

Why did I choose the name In the Blue?
Our planet is called the blue planet and 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. When we look up at the sky we see a blue horizon, a blue line that seems infinite, but at night it disappears and we see stars {lots of them}. Life as we know it is lived in the blue, and I live in that blue.

Exactly a year a go today I embarked on a journey of self discovery, self love and self style. So much has happened and I've learned so much. I've learned to not compare myself to anyone, it does nothing for your self-esteem. I have learned to not care what people think, if you're happy that's all that matters. Most of all, I've learned not to be so critical and hard on myself {I am still working on being my own best friend}. Life is about change, adapting and going with the flow. Its made up of moments painted together to form a picture, a self portrait. Moments are pieces of time that make up our experiences, our understanding of not only ourself, but the world.

When I initially started this blog, I had no idea what I wanted it to be. Over the past year I've struggled to post consistently and really showcase who I am. Looking back at my posts and pictures makes me really appreciate myself for starting this blog, its like my virtual dressing room diary.  However, I've decided to change things up a bit and add different types of content that are a reflection of me. Stay tuned. {If you read all of this then, thank you so much for reading}. Thank you to each one of you who has consistently come back to my blog, I appreciate it!

Stripes + Denim

Grunge meets hipster is how I would define this look. Living in a major metropolitan city has really rubbed off on me. I see myself wearing menswear, hipster and grunge with a dash of feminine prep inspired pieces more often. I'm loving this whole experimental phase of mine as I continue to define my style, on a budget. I have always loved clothes and fashion, but as I've gotten older I've realized that value lies in experiences and not in having the next it bag or shoes, they are only temporary subsides to happiness. The key to being happy is experiencing all the tiny moments that make up life. I think that's why they call it an experience of a lifetime.

DIY: distressed high waisted denim shorts

What you need: Old 'mom' jeans, scissors, tweezers and marker

I've been a huge fan of this trend, but never really thought it would work on me. However, curiosity got to the best of me and I said why not? I found these Tommy Hilfiger jeans at the thrift store for $5 {after trying on at least 10 pairs}. Look for a 'mom jean' with a long crotch {see the pictures above} and long zipper. This is a good indicator for the right pair of jeans to use. Also, go up a few sizes to get a more relaxed look and feel around the thighs {you don't want the jeans to hug your thighs}.
Steps:
1. Try the jeans on to see how high you want to make the cut {the key is to cut at an angle, up and outward}.
2. While still wearing the jeans, draw on with a marker where you want to make the cut.
3. Lay out the jeans flat and cut each leg separately to get a more precise cut.
3. Once cut, try them on to see if this the desired length you want if not then cut again.
4. Use the scissors and tweetzers to fray the ends
5. {Optional} make any other cuts, holes, frays in the jeans as desired {like I did above}
6. {IMPORTANT} Wash and dry the jeans, this will amp up that distressed look and feel
7. Style and wear your new creation!

Head over to my Instagram to get a sneak peak of how I styled these distressed high waisted shorts and look out for a post featuring them this week. What do you think of this DIY, will you try it?

Happy Tuesday!

Royal Blue

One of my favorite colors of all time is royal blue. Its a color not common to clothing items {in my opinion}, but looks beautiful on any skin tone! I found this dress at Zara during their winter sale. They also had it in white, but white and I don't mix too well. I'd ruin/stain the dress in seconds! What's your favorite color to wear?

Wishing you a blue-tiful Monday!

Three Ways | Chambray Shirt

The chambray shirt is so versatile in that it can be worn multiple ways for any occasion. I have a rule of thumb, if I can't think of at least 3 outfits to wear with an item I'm looking to purchase then I won't buy it {well, sometimes I'll just buy it anyway because I'm a girl}. How do you like to wear your chambray?

Outfit Details: Forever 21 chambray, Old Navy yellow sweater, Forever 21 skirt, Gap vest {actually a part of parka jacket}.

P.S.
I'm loving hats right now!

Lost footage aka pictures from my trip to Southern California in December. It was so beautiful and breath taking in so many ways {especially for someone who has lived on the east coast their whole entire life}! Do you have any favorite vacation spots?

V-Day: Romantic Makeup ♡

Happy Valentine's Day!
A simple, quick and easy romantic look for the day of love {or for any day}.
From the Urban Decay Naked Palette 2 I used the colors half baked {in the inner corner}, chopper {all over the lid}, tease {in the crease} and foxy {as a highlight on the brow bone}. I also used a NYX eyeshadow in rust all over the lid, its a rich cranberry color. Then I applied chopper on top of, it gives a warm, almost rosegold color with these two colors layered on top of each other. Next, I lined my upper lash line using L'Oreal Linear Intense liquid liner {I highly recommend this liner, it gives you a lot of precision and control}. I coated my lashes with L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes mascara {my favorite}. On the cheeks I used Physician Formula Happy Booster in Happy {it provides a natural glow to the cheeks} and Wet n' Wild blush in Heather Silk {very pigmented and a pretty shade of pink} on top. Lastly, I finished off this look with some lip balm and MAC lipstick in Viva Glam VI {lustre, semi-nude with a hint of pink, great for everyday}. Voila, done!

Happy Valentine's Day from Marley and me :)
